What should I look for in a Yorkie purchase?

I am looking to purchase a male, tea-cup, yorkie terrier puppy at the beginning of next month. I am unsure about what I should look for when I choose a breeder? About how much should I pay (I’ve heard from $750-$2000)? The ads talk about the puppies having all their shots, a year of health guerantee, dewormed, and house broken. Is this usually true? What does CKC mean? I’m really clueless and I want to get the best dog I can get. Money is not an issue, but I don’t want to over pay.

First, you need to understand that “teacup” is a fancy term used by irresponsible backyard breeders and puppy millers to describe tiny, tiny puppies so they can make more money. These dogs are usually the runts of the litter or purposely bred from small parents. Owning one of these tiny dogs means there are certain health problems, including hypoglycemia. Yorkshire Terriers are already very small and very fragile. According to the AKC, a Yorkshire Terrier must not exceed 7 pounds. If that’s the case, wouldn’t a 2 pound Yorkshire Terrier still be a regular Yorkshire Terrier? Please do not fall for “teacups”. No good breeder would ever advertise using those fancy terms, and anyone who does shouldn’t be supported.

I recommend you check out http://www.ytca.org for a breeder listing of responsible breeders.

When choosing a breeder, there are many factors that come into play. Here are a few.

1. A good breeder should show their dogs. This ensures that the dogs they’re breeding are as close to the breed standard as possible. They know that they’re improving the breed by breeding the best.

2. They MUST do genetic and health tests on all their dogs. This includes OFA, CERF, PennHip, etc. They should be able to provide proof for that.

3. They will thoroughly screen every potential home, and will not give a puppy to anyone who has money.

4. No puppy leaves their home before at least 8 weeks of age. Small breeds, like the Yorkshire Terrier, ideally, should be kept until at least 10 weeks of age.

5. They can tell you why they breed, what they’re trying to do, and why they bred two particular dogs.

6. They give at least a 2 year genetic guarantee. Most genetic problems do not show up until at least 2 years of age. They also give lifetime support, meaning if you ever have any questions, they’ll be happy to help.

7. In their contract, they state that a pet puppy must be spayed/neutered around 6 months of age. It also states that if you ever can not keep the dog, you must contact them before doing anything.

8. Their puppies have all proper shots and wormers. They’re able to provide the records for that.

9. All their dogs live in their home. They are not put out in a separate building. All the puppies are born right in their home and the breeder is with them every step of the way.

10. A good breeder WILL NOT register with crap registries like the ContinentalKC, ACR, APRI, ACA, etc. These registries will register almost any dog. It just has to look like a purebred, photos need to sent in, and there should be people who say it’s a purebred. They will ONLY register with the AKC, UKC, or CanadianKC. These registries are much more particular and will not let any dog register with them.

As you can see, it takes a lot to be a good breeder. It takes time to find a good breeder, so don’t rush. Please do not go out and buy any puppy you see. It’s important you find the time to research and be sure you’re getting a puppy from a good breeder.

No 8 week old puppy will be housebroken. That’s definitely a BYB. Ads are probably the worst place to get a puppy from. A good breeder will already have potential homes lined up, and will not advertise on sites.

I would say you’re looking to spend about $1,000, maybe a little more, for a well-bred Yorkshire Terrier.
